Hanse 531

Launched late last fall, this 53-foot sloop is the largest boat built to date by this venerable German builder. The designer, Judel/Vrolijk & Co., has managed to combine generous interior volume with excellent sailing performance. An almost vertical stem produces a long waterline for enhanced potential top speed, while a relatively wide-beam waterline helps build the stability needed to carry a large amount of sail in a wide range of conditions. Dual steering stations aft produce a clean, functional cockpit, and the self-tacking headsail and swept-back spreaders make the boat easy to operate.

Belowdecks details include plenty of space for individual crewmembers as well as a wide selection of wood trim and fabrics. Further customization involves selecting from several available cabin, galley, and saloon options, including one that has a forward crew cabin. Construction is solid glass laminate up to the waterline with balsa core in the remaining upper sections of the hull and the deck. A structural liner is bonded and laminated to the hull's interior.
