Mini V70’s?
Team Heiner 38’s pack big power into a little package

By David Schmidt

If you’re interested in the mind-boggling speed potential of hoped-up boats like Volvo Open 70’s, the world’s fastest monohulls, but aren’t willing to commit to frigid Southern Ocean passages, the Team Heiner 38 could be your ticket. The “TH38” was designed in collaboration between Juan Kouyoumdian (designer of the fabled 2005/2006 Volvo Ocean Race winner ABN Amro One) and Dutch sailing great Roy Heiner, as a way for sailors to experience the thrills of a canting-keel raceboat, sans the staggering bills generated by running a V70 program.

The boat will feature dual helms (wheels), dual rudders, a canard, a long bowsprit, and an open cockpit. Hulls and decks will be constructed out of carbon fiber (epoxy infused) with a foam core; keels will be able to swing through 60 degrees, and a small, retractable, electric engine will provide propulsion for docking and for times when the wind dies. The swept carbon rig will fly fractional upwind headsails, and both fractional and masthead kites. As with most modern-generation raceboats, the TH38 will feature a mainsail with a huge amount of roach, and an AC/Volvo Ocean Race-inspired almost-square-topped headboard.

Two interiors are available, the first being a modular racer/cruiser interior that’s semi-custom; the second option, which is geared more towards offshore sailing, will feature a head, removable bunks, a nav station, and a galley. For more information, check out www.teamheiner.com
