Tips + Advice: Practice, Don't Pretend

St. Barts Yachts owner, Chuck Laughlin, always enjoys selling a boat to an older couple. But if he knows they've been away from the activity for a number of years, he’s not shy about suggesting that they get out on the water and practice together. “A couple in their 40s or 50s,” he says, “might think that just because they sailed a lot when they were young they are as sharp as they once were.” Unfortunately that’s just not always true.

A 40-foot sailboat, he adds, is a lot like a small house with fuel, electrical, water, and other delivery systems. All make life on board pleasant but they have to be operated correctly. None of the systems are particularly complicated, he adds, but you have to understand how they work.

So if you are thinking about retiring and getting a boat, do yourself a favor says Laughlin. Go sailing with friends who have a boat, or charter a boat that’s the size you are considering. Climbing back to the top of your game isn’t difficult but just pretending you are there won't make it so. You need to practice together, out on the water. Charles Mason
